The present study aims to assess the land use/land cover changes in the study area using remote sensing and GIS techniques. The study area, Kolkata metropolitan area, has undergone rapid urbanization and land use changes in recent years. Multi-temporal satellite images of 1980, 1990, 2000, and 2008 have been used to study the land use/land cover changes. The images have been classified using a supervised classification technique. The results show significant changes in land use/land cover patterns over the study period. The urban area has increased significantly, while the agricultural land and vegetation cover have decreased. The GIS analysis reveals that the changes are concentrated in the areas with high population density and accessibility.
