Independent critics are already hailing it as a return to form after the heavy political weight of The Green Tide . Whether the film will secure a release in his homeland remains uncertain. As Nieh noted in a recent Zoom interview from his Taipei studio, "You can take the filmmaker out of Beijing, but you cannot take Beijing out of the filmmaker. The city is in every frame of my work—even the ones I shoot in the South of France."
