When the United States initially rebuffed him, he turned to the British embassy, where a junior diplomat famously asked: "Would you like a cup of tea?" That sentence changed his life. The British Secret Intelligence Service (MI6) swiftly exfiltrated Mitrokhin, his family, and the entire archive to the United Kingdom.
