The railway line begins at Osaka Station, one of the busiest railway stations in Japan, and proceeds southwest through the cities of Sakai and Kishiwada. The line then passes through the scenic coastal towns of Izumiotsu and Taiso, eventually reaching Kobe Station. From Kobe, the line heads northeast, passing through the cities of Akashi and Himeji, before terminating at Kyoto Station.
